Pabna, Oct 13 (V7N) – An elderly mother who had been denied shelter by her son in Santhia upazila of Pabna has finally returned to his home following the intervention of a judge at the Pabna Chief Judicial Magistrate Court.

The son, Sagar Hossain, 30, a village police member of Nagdemra Union Parishad, has agreed to provide his mother, Munni Khatun, 50, with shelter and take responsibility for her maintenance.

Santhia Police Station Officer-in-Charge Anisur Rahman confirmed the development.

According to local sources, Munni Khatun had repeatedly sought help from local representatives after her son refused to keep her with him and provide for her. Attempts to resolve the matter locally failed to produce a lasting solution. She later submitted a written complaint to the upazila executive officer, seeking the opportunity to live with her son in her later years.

On Thursday, October 8, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Selim Ahmed heard the complaint from Munni Khatun and her son. During the hearing, he repeatedly urged Sagar to take his elderly mother into his home and care for her, stressing the need for a humane solution that would ensure the security of his ageing and reportedly ill mother.

However, Sagar initially refused to keep her with him. At one point, he reportedly told the UNO that he would commit suicide if he were forced to live with his mother, adding that he would rather provide her with a monthly allowance.

A video of the hearing at the UNO's office circulated on social media on October 8, triggering widespread discussion and criticism.

The incident came to the attention of the court's magistrate responsible for Santhia police station cases. Acting on its own initiative, the court directed the Santhia police chief to bring both the mother and son before it on Sunday afternoon, October 11.

OC Anisur Rahman said police transported the two to the court in compliance with the order. After hearing both sides, the judge mediated between them and helped resolve the dispute.

Following the mediation, Sagar agreed to provide for his mother and allow her to live with him. He also embraced her, acknowledged his mistake and apologised to the people of the country. He promised not to repeat such behaviour.

Expressing her happiness, Munni Khatun said she was delighted that her son had realised his mistake and welcomed her back into his home.

“What more could make me happier than knowing that my son has understood his mistake, taken me into his home and agreed to keep me with him?” she said.

Sagar also acknowledged his wrongdoing, saying he had disrespected his mother and that his behaviour had been unacceptable.

“The honourable judge helped me realise my mistake. I want to spend the rest of my life with my mother. Please keep us in your prayers,” he said.

The court's intervention brought an end to the immediate dispute, allowing the mother to return to her son's home with an assurance of care and support.
