Cox’s Bazar, May 20 (V7N) — Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested an alleged drug trafficker during a special anti-smuggling operation in Teknaf and recovered 50,000 yaba tablets, a foreign-made pistol, and five rounds of ammunition, officials said on Wednesday.
The arrested suspect was identified as Lutfur Rahman, 21, son of Nur Ahmed, a resident of Karengaghona village under Hnila Union in Teknaf.
Lieutenant Colonel Zahirul Islam, commanding officer of Ukhiya Battalion (64 BGB), confirmed the matter on Wednesday morning.
According to BGB officials, acting on intelligence information, a special patrol team from the Hwaikyang Border Outpost (BOP) under Ukhiya Battalion conducted an operation around 9:20 PM on Tuesday near the Karengaghona BGB post, approximately two kilometers northeast of the BOP and adjacent to border pillar BRM-18 inside Bangladesh territory.
During the operation, several suspected smugglers were reportedly crossing the Naf River from Myanmar into Bangladesh when BGB personnel challenged them. Sensing the presence of law enforcement, the smugglers attempted to flee toward a nearby village. However, BGB members managed to capture Lutfur Rahman during the chase.
Officials said that subsequent searches at his residence led to the recovery of one foreign-made pistol, five rounds of ammunition, and 50,000 yaba tablets.
During preliminary interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed that he had collected the yaba tablets from the Myanmar border with the intention of selling them at a higher price in different parts of the country.
He also disclosed that several local individuals were allegedly involved in the smuggling network and assisted in transporting the narcotics across the border.
The arrested suspect was later handed over to Teknaf Model Police Station for further legal proceedings.
Authorities said efforts are continuing to identify and arrest other individuals involved in the cross-border drug trafficking operation.
