Sylhet, Aug. 13 (V7N) — A married couple and their domestic worker were found dead at a residence in Sylhet city on Wednesday, with police saying a man suspected of involvement in the killings has been detained.

The bodies were recovered from a house in the Mitali area of Raynagar in the morning. The deceased were identified as homeowner Abdul Sattar, 90, his wife Suraiya Begum, 76, and their domestic worker Tahmina, 18.

Sylhet Metropolitan Police detained Babul Mia, 40, from the Raynagar area at around 3pm in connection with the incident.

According to police, Babul had previously worked as a painter at the house and occasionally worked as a butcher. Police said he had developed a relationship with Tahmina while working there.

Sylhet Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sarwar Murshed Shamim said Babul entered the house at around 9am after Tahmina opened the door for him. According to the police account, the two went into a room, where an argument reportedly broke out.

The commissioner said Babul allegedly attacked Tahmina with a knife during the altercation. When Suraiya approached after hearing a disturbance, she was also allegedly attacked. Abdul Sattar was subsequently attacked when he came towards the room after hearing the commotion, police said.

Police said all three victims died in the incident and that Babul allegedly fled through a veranda afterwards.

The police commissioner said the suspect's account had led investigators to search nearby bushes for the alleged weapon used in the killings. Further legal proceedings are underway.

Police said the exact circumstances surrounding the deaths are being investigated and that the suspect's statements would be subject to further verification.

Abdul Sattar was reportedly a member of the Sylhet Chamber of Commerce and Industry and had served as an adviser to a ward-level Awami League organisation.

He lived at the Raynagar residence with his wife. The couple had four children, with two reportedly living in London and two in the United States.

Police are continuing their investigation into the triple killing.
