Khulna Nov 22 (V7N)- 6,520.21 metric tons of Indian rice have been imported through Bhomra land port in Satkhira in the last 8 days. Rice import started through Bhomra land port from November 13 after the National Board of Revenue (NBR) withdrew customs duty on rice import.
According to port authority sources, after the withdrawal of customs duty on rice import, 12 importing companies approved by the Ministry of Food started importing rice through Bhomra port from November 13. Since the beginning, Dhaka's Puran Paltan Majumdar Ekgrotech International importing company has imported about 1861.47 metric tons of rice from India using Bhomra port in four phases. Of this, 770 metric tons of rice were imported on November 13 of the current fiscal year, about 368.50 metric tons on November 16, 380.97 metric tons on November 17, and 342 metric tons on November 18.
Mukul Enterprise of Kalaroa, Satkhira imported 100 metric tons of rice on November 13, 100 metric tons on November 14 and another 100 metric tons on November 17, totaling 300 metric tons. Ismail Hossain Milon of Jhikargachha, Jessore imported 100 metric tons of rice on November 13. Abul Mansur Khan of Bogra imported 150 metric tons on November 14, 150 metric tons on November 16 and 200 metric tons on November 18, totaling 500 metric tons of rice. Sardar Aluminum Store of Jessore Baghachra imported 100 metric tons on November 14 and 100 metric tons on November 18, totaling 200 metric tons of rice. Zakirganj Md. Abul Kalam Enterprise of Sylhet imported 40 metric tons of rice on November 16. Islampur Rice Mill of Jessore imported 100 metric tons on November 16 and 95 metric tons on November 18, totaling 195 metric tons of rice. Jessore's Nawapara Sushanta Krishna Roy imported 99.996 metric tons of rice on November 16 and a total of 200 metric tons on November 18. Jessore's Jhikargachha Imo Traders imported 200 metric tons of rice on November 17. Jessore's Majumdar & Sons imported 352.50 metric tons on November 17 and 382.50 metric tons on November 18, totaling 735 metric tons of rice. Jessore's Benapole SMM International imported 251 metric tons of rice on November 18 and Magura's Mahamaya Traders imported 105.24 metric tons of rice.
Besides, on November 20, Mukul Enterprise of Kalaroa imported 200 metric tons, Ismail Hossain Milon of Jhikargachha imported 200 metric tons, SMM International of Benapole imported 200 metric tons, Majumdar Food Products Private Limited of Jessore imported 462.50 metric tons, and Rezaul & Sons of Jessore imported 75 metric tons of rice.
Abu Musa, General Secretary of Bhomra Custom C&F Agents Association, said that the Indian government imposed a ban on rice exports outside the country from July 20, 2023. After resolving long-standing complications, the Indian government withdrew the ban on rice exports. After that, rice imports from India resumed from November 13 through various land customs stations in the country. In continuation of this, the country's top importing companies have continued their rice import activities from India using Bhomra Port.
Bhomra Land Customs Station Deputy Commissioner Abul Kalam Azad said that rice import has started through Bhomra Land Port after the NBR withdrew customs duty on rice imports. After the import started, 12 approved rice importing companies imported 6520.21 metric tons of rice from India through Bhomra Port in 8 days from November 13 to November 20. He said that if this trend continues, rice import through this port will increase in the future.
