Rajshahi, May 17 (V7N) - In a first for the nation, two wetlands in Rajshahi have been officially declared as 'wetland-dependent animal sanctuaries'. The announcement was made through two separate notifications issued on Wednesday by the Forest Branch-2 of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. Both sanctuaries are located in Rajshahi district. One is situated in Biljoana of Tanore upazila, and the other in Bilbhala of Godagari upazila.
The area of Biljoana wetland spans 1.65 acres of the mouza (administrative unit), while Bilbhala wetland covers a larger area of 15.8 acres. Jahangir Kabir, Wildlife Inspector of Rajshahi, Wildlife and Nature Conservation Department, confirmed this significant development. He stated that this declaration will be effective under the Wildlife (Conservation and Protection) Act, 2012.
The Biljoana and Bilbhala wetlands are renowned as crucial and safe havens for both native and migratory birds, particularly during the winter season. Native waterfowl such as Kalem, Koda, Dahuk, Gurguri, Jalppi, and Jalmayur are commonly found in these areas. Migratory birds like Balihans, Pati Sarali, Bara Sarali, Piang Han, Khunte Han, and Bhuti Han also roam freely within these wetlands. Beyond the hundreds of bird species, these wetlands also support diverse populations of amphibians, reptiles, and mammals.
Jahangir Kabir, the Wildlife Inspector, emphasized the importance and timeliness of the government's decision, stating, "The biodiversity of these wetlands has been under threat for the past few years due to various reasons. In this context, the government's decision to declare the sanctuary is a very important and timely decision." He further added, "The declaration of the sanctuary will ensure safe habitat for birds and other wild animals in these areas from now on. At the same time, it will develop into a rich biodiversity education area for students, researchers, and nature lovers."
