RANGAMATI, JUNE 02 (V7N) – In a commendable and unprecedented move, Rangamati police have launched a proactive initiative to combat extortion activities surrounding the sacrificial animal market as Eid-ul-Adha approaches. The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kotwali police station is personally leading efforts to take action against extortionists and protect low-income workers from their grasp, earning widespread praise from businessmen, drivers, and laborers alike.

Historically, the period leading up to Eid-ul-Adha sees a rise in various illicit activities, including extortion, around animal markets nationwide, and Rangamati has been no exception. However, this year, Rangamati Superintendent of Police (SP) Dr. S.M. Farhad Hossain has issued strict instructions to his officers to take decisive action against such practices.

In line with these directives, the Rangamati Kotwali Police Station, with the full backing of the district police, has recently commenced operations targeting extortionists and miscreants operating under the guise of special groups.

On Saturday afternoon, at the Rangamati Municipal Truck Terminal, Kotwali Police Station OC Md. Shahid Uddin, accompanied by police personnel, personally addressed local businessmen, transport workers, and members of the driver-worker union. Using a microphone, he conveyed the police's firm stance against extortion. The OC emphasized that the truck terminal is a crucial source of livelihood for workers, and it is "unacceptable that someone from outside will come and extort money from the cattle market and the terminal on behalf of a particular group or party." He urged the public to identify and report any individuals involved in misdeeds that discredit the police or security forces, and to provide information against extortionists and miscreants.

OC Shahid Uddin highlighted that Rangamati SP Dr. S.M. Farhad Hossain is personally and constantly monitoring the overall situation, including the sacrificial animal market. He assured that under the SP's direct supervision, every police member is working tirelessly to maintain security and law and order for the people of Rangamati, vowing that the Kotwali Police Station would show "no concession to the miscreants."

Local businessmen expressed their deep satisfaction with the "courageous and timely decision" of the Rangamati Kotwali Police Station OC. They lauded the initiative as "exceptional," noting that such a step has not been taken in the past two decades, and requested its continuation.
