Dhaka, Jun 04 (V7N) – The interim government has issued an ordinance redefining the term “freedom fighter,” distinguishing between direct combatants and collaborators of the liberation war. The ordinance was issued on Tuesday night (June 3).

According to the new definition, freedom fighters will now be categorized into two groups — those who directly took part in the armed struggle, and those who played supporting roles as collaborators of the Liberation War.

However, officials clarified that this reclassification will not affect the honor, dignity, or benefits of those involved in the country’s struggle for independence.

Speaking to journalists at his office on Wednesday morning, the Advisor on Liberation War Affairs emphasized that the move is not intended to undermine anyone's contributions.

"This ordinance does not belittle any individual. Everyone involved with the Mujibnagar government will be recognized as freedom fighters," the advisor stated.

He explained that individuals such as diplomats, staff of Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra, and others who contributed off the battlefield would be identified as collaborators of the liberation war, rather than freedom fighters in the strict sense.

"The term 'collaborator' in this context does not diminish their honor. Their role was vital. We are returning to the original definition from 1972, which was altered in 2018 and 2022," he added.

The ordinance aims to restore clarity and historical accuracy to the recognition of freedom fighters while ensuring that all contributors to the 1971 war continue to receive their due respect and state support.
