TEKNAF, July 30 (V7N) – Investigative journalist Jasim Uddin Tipu has been named as an accused in a case filed over an incident at Whykong Union Parishad, allegedly following his series of reports on the proposed division of unions in Teknaf.

Tipu, a Teknaf correspondent for several newspapers including Daily Ajker Desh Bidesh, CBN, The New Nation, and Destiny, had published a series of reports with photographs and public opinions on the union division issue since July 17. His reports examined the possible benefits and challenges of the proposed administrative changes and highlighted concerns raised by local residents.

On the day of the Whykong Union incident, Tipu prepared a report featuring images of protesting residents and statements from the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), police officials, and other relevant authorities as part of his professional duty.

The reports reportedly drew criticism from some individuals who supported the union division proposal. Tipu’s investigations included public concerns that the division could create leadership disputes, increase local conflicts, and create difficulties for citizens in accessing essential services.

The journalist had also recently published reports on alleged irregularities and other local issues, including claims related to the occupation of a government facility in Teknaf, which reportedly caused dissatisfaction among some political groups.

Local journalists have condemned the inclusion of Tipu’s name in the case, describing it as an attempt to intimidate a professional journalist. They said Tipu, who serves as the organising secretary of Teknaf Press Club and joint convener of Teknaf Journalists Association, has consistently reported on issues including drug trafficking, human trafficking, crime, and social problems.

Journalists in Teknaf said legal action should not be used to silence investigative reporting and called for a fair review of the allegations against him.

They added that Tipu’s commitment to uncovering social irregularities and criminal activities would continue despite the legal challenges.
