Ukhiya, July 8 (V7N) – A Union Parishad (UP) member was found brutally murdered in Ukhiya upazila of Cox’s Bazar on Tuesday, raising suspicions of political violence in the region. The victim, Kamal Uddin Durjoy (40), was a member of Ward No. 8 in Jaliapalong Union and an active figure in the local unit of the forbidden Jubo League.

The mutilated body was recovered from a canal in the Monkhali area under Jaliapalong Union at around noon, after he had been missing since late Monday night. Locals, along with law enforcement, helped recover the body. Police say the victim was slaughtered, and the body has been sent for autopsy at Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital.

Kamal, the son of late Siddique Ahmed of Monkhali village, was reportedly last seen around 11:00 PM on Monday, July 7. His family launched a search when he did not return home, only to find his lifeless body the following day near a canal.

Speaking to the media, Kamal’s father-in-law, teacher Abdur Rahman, said, “We are on the way to the scene. We still don’t know what exactly happened.”

According to family members, Kamal was well-known and widely respected in his community. They suspect his affiliation with the Awami League may have played a role in his targeted killing. He leaves behind a wife, a son, and a daughter.

Durjoy Sarkar, in-charge of the nearby Inani Police Outpost, also confirmed police were dispatched to the location immediately after receiving the alert.

Confirming the incident, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ukhiya Police Station Mohammad Arif Hossain said, “We have recovered the body and are preparing to send it for autopsy. Further investigation is underway.”
