SYLHET, March 6, (V7N) - Mosquito infestation has suddenly increased in Sylhet city, sparking anger among residents who accuse the Sylhet City Corporation (CSIC) of failing to act effectively.
On Friday, three voluntary organizations—Sylhet Kalyan Sangstha (SIX), Sylhet Division Youth Welfare Organization, and Sylhet Probashi Kalyan Sangstha—submitted a memorandum to the City Corporation Administrator demanding urgent measures.
Speakers at a rally said the current mosquito-control activities are “eyewash” and ineffective. They alleged that expired medicines used in fogging machines are killing cockroaches and rats in drains rather than mosquitoes, posing health risks.
Residents complained that during Ramadan, when devout Muslims are engaged in worship, they are suffering day and night due to mosquito bites. Many households are resorting to coils, sprays, and toxic chemicals, which are harmful to children and the elderly.
Speakers warned of rising risks of dengue, malaria, and yellow fever, and demanded practical, long-term steps with proper planning at the field level.
The program was moderated by Humayun Rashid Chowdhury, General Secretary of the Divisional Committee of CBUKS, with a welcome speech by Divisional President Alhajj Mukhtar Ahmed Talukder. Other speakers included Md. Abdus Shahid Khan, Chitta Ranjan Das, and Advocate Muhammad Kamal Mia.
