RAJSHAHI, March 7, (V7N) - Following the formation of the BNP government, political activity has intensified in Rajshahi over nominations for reserved women’s seats in parliament. At least four prominent women leaders from the district have become active contenders, lobbying central leaders and submitting political resumes.
The aspirants include:
Jahan Panna – Former MP for a reserved women’s seat in the 8th National Parliament, currently vice-president of the BNP’s central Mohila Dal and member of the party’s national executive committee.
Mahmuda Habiba – Candidate for Rajshahi-5 (Puthia-Durgapur), founding member of G-Nine, joint general secretary of the central Krishak Dal, and member of the district BNP convening committee.
Advocate Shamshad Begum Mitali – President of Rajshahi District Mohila Dal, known as a jailed leader, with strong family ties to BNP politics.
Rokhsana Begum Tuktuki – Divisional organizing secretary of Mohila Dal, long active at the grassroots level.
Local BNP activists believe Rajshahi, with six parliamentary seats—four won by BNP and two by Jamaat-e-Islami—could secure a reserved women’s seat. They expect nominations to favor long-time, tested leaders.
Mitali emphasized her sacrifices: “I have been active on the streets during the party’s difficult times and have also provided legal assistance. I hope the party will take a decision considering my contribution.” Tuktuki added: “I have always been active in the party’s programs. If the center evaluates sacrificed leaders, I can be considered.”
District Krishak Dal convener Shafiqul Alam Sampoto said: “Someone should be nominated who is active in Rajshahi politics and has stood by the party during difficult times.”
Curiosity and expectations are running high in Rajshahi as party members await the BNP high command’s final decision on who will represent the district in the reserved women’s seats.
