JHALAKATHI, April 17, (V7N) – In Kanthalia upazila of Jhalakathi, banned chargara nets are being used openly in rivers and canals to catch juvenile fish, despite strict prohibitions. Local reports suggest unscrupulous fishermen are conducting the activity at night and dawn, evading administrative oversight.
The practice has spread across inland canals, including the Bishkhali River, where poles are placed along banks and canal mouths to trap fish during low tide. Because of the nets’ fine mesh, even aquatic insects are caught, raising alarm among experts about long-term ecological damage.
Local resident Md. Bazlur Rahman Mridha said the “fishing festival” is held secretly before sunrise. Fisheries officials confirmed the destructive impact. “The use of such nets is completely prohibited. Chargara or Behundi nets are considered very harmful to fish reproduction and growth. Our regular campaign is continuing,” said Rajapur Upazila Fisheries Officer Gautam Mondal, who also holds additional charge of Kanthalia.
Experts warn that if juvenile fish continue to be killed at this rate, the survival of local species will be endangered. Despite the risks, fishermen are selling the catch in local markets, underscoring the urgent need for stronger enforcement.
