Dhaka, Jan 27, (V7N) - On Sunday night, January 26, a violent clash broke out between students of Dhaka University (DU) and students from the 7 Colleges at the New Market area in Dhaka. The situation quickly escalated, with both groups exchanging slogans and engaging in a physical confrontation. Despite police attempts to intervene and restore order, the two sides continued to clash.
The incident occurred at approximately 11:30 PM when the situation at New Market became tense. Eyewitnesses reported that the police tried to control the crowd by deploying sound grenades, but they were unsuccessful in calming the students.
Earlier in the evening, students from the 7 Colleges had gathered at Nilkhet, while DU students assembled in front of the Sir AF Rahman Hall. This led to a direct face-off between the two groups. As tensions mounted, police arrived at the scene and attempted to separate the groups. However, a brief chase between the two sides took place before the situation intensified.
At around 10:30 PM, students from the 7 Colleges lifted a blockade at the Science Lab intersection and started marching towards the Dhaka College campus. As they reached the campus, more students from Dhaka College joined them, and the group made their way to Dhaka University. They announced plans to surround the residence of the Pro-Vice Chancellor (PVC) of DU as part of their protest.
Prior to these developments, students had blocked important roads starting at 6:30 PM, which severely disrupted traffic in the area. Key roads, including those near Science Lab and New Market, saw complete traffic stoppages, causing inconvenience to commuters.
The students of both DU and the 7 Colleges have been protesting over various issues, with demands for better educational conditions and facilities. The protests have led to heightened tensions, and the clashes at New Market marked the latest in a series of protests and demonstrations across the city.
