Dhaka, Dec 31 (V7N) – The government has decided to reduce the number of holidays in government primary schools in the 2026 academic year to enhance student learning time. According to the official holiday list, a total of 64 days of holidays have been scheduled for the year.

The holiday list, signed by Deputy Secretary of the Department of Primary Education, Rawshan Ara Poli, was released on Tuesday (December 30). The new schedule has notably shortened breaks during the holy month of Ramadan, keeping schools open for almost the entire period.

According to the list, Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr holidays in 2026 will officially begin on March 8, though the start of fasting may shift to February 17 depending on the moon sighting. In that case, government primary schools will remain open until Ramadan 21.

The number of holidays for Ramadan, Independence Day, Jumatul Bida, Shab-e-Qadr, and Eid-ul-Fitr has been reduced from 28 days in 2025 to 19 days in 2026. Additionally, Eid-ul-Azha and summer vacation holidays have been shortened from 15 days to 12 days, while winter vacation has been reduced from 11 days to 10 days.

In total, including all general holidays, government primary schools will observe 64 holidays in 2026, compared to 76 days in 2025, reflecting a reduction of 12 days to increase academic learning time.
