Dhaka, Jan 06, (V7N) - Renowned actor Prabir Mitra, famously known as ‘Rongin Nobab,’ has passed away at the age of 83. He died on the night of January 5, 2025, at 10:30 PM in Square Hospital, Dhaka, while undergoing treatment for various health complications.
Prabir Mitra, who had been admitted to the hospital on December 22, 2024, due to multiple physical ailments, passed away after his condition worsened. He is survived by his one daughter and three sons.
Born as Prabir Mitra, he later converted to Islam and adopted the name Hasan Imam after his marriage. He revealed in an interview that he had converted to Islam for his marriage and remained a Muslim throughout his life. However, Prabir Mitra was always known by his original name.
Prabir Mitra began his acting career in the 1960s, making his film debut in the movie "Jalchhobi," directed by H Akbar. Though he initially appeared as a lead actor, he was widely recognized for his roles as a supporting actor in numerous films, including ‘Titash Ekti Nadir Naam,’ ‘Chabuk,’ and ‘Nabab Siraj-ud-Doula.’
In addition to acting, Prabir Mitra was also a prominent sports figure in his early years, having played cricket, hockey, and football in Dhaka’s First Division leagues.
Prabir Mitra's wife, Ajantha Mitra, passed away in 2000, and he continued his acting career while balancing his family life. Despite his conversion to Islam, he remained a beloved figure in the Bengali film industry, and his contributions to the arts will be remembered by all.
His death marks the end of an era for the Dhaka film industry, as he was one of the most respected actors of his time.
