Dhaka, Feb 11 (V7N) – Following a strong protest and firm stance by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), India’s Border Security Force (BSF) has assured the removal of CCTV cameras installed at the zero line of the Bhurungamari border in Kurigram.
At a flag meeting held in Bangladesh territory near Jhakuatari Jame Mosque (Twin Mosque) on the Dakshin Banshjani border on Tuesday morning, BSF officials assured BGB that the cameras would be removed by Wednesday.
The information was confirmed by Lieutenant Colonel Muhammad Masudur Rahman, commander of Kurigram BGB 22 Battalion.
According to BGB sources, on Sunday, members of the Indian 162 BSF Battalion’s Small Caravan Camp installed a CCTV camera on a eucalyptus tree, five yards inside India.
The camera faced Bangladesh near border pillar 978/9-S, adjacent to the zero line — a location under the jurisdiction of Diyadanga BOP, BGB 22 Battalion, Kurigram.
Once the BGB noticed the installation, they immediately objected and called for a flag meeting with the 162 BSF Battalion commander. The meeting was held at 11am on Tuesday at Jora Masjid in Bangladesh territory.
The flag meeting was led by BGB 22 Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel Muhammad Masudur Rahman and 162 BSF Battalion Commander Anil Kumar.
During the meeting, BSF officials claimed that the CCTV camera had been installed for security reasons around the twin mosque area on the zero line. However, BGB strongly opposed the justification and demanded the immediate removal of the surveillance cameras, reiterating Bangladesh’s firm stance on border sovereignty.
In a statement to the media, BGB confirmed that BSF agreed to remove the cameras in response to their strong position.
The meeting also addressed other bilateral border issues, including the removal of tin structures built on the zero line and preventing the construction of illegal paved structures within 150 yards of the border.
BGB 22 Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel Muhammad Masudur Rahman described the meeting as fruitful, saying: “The BSF has agreed to remove the CCTV cameras. They have assured us that the cameras will be taken down by Wednesday.”
