Islamabad, Pakistan, May 10(V7N) – India and Pakistan have agreed to a ceasefire on Saturday following talks led by the United States, aiming to end the most severe military confrontation between the two nuclear-armed nations in recent decades.
The ceasefire agreement comes after weeks of intense clashes, including missile and drone strikes across their borders. These hostilities were triggered by a gun massacre of tourists last month, which India attributed to Pakistan – a charge Pakistan denies. The conflict has resulted in dozens of civilian casualties on both sides.
The truce was first announced by US President Donald Trump via a post on his Truth Social platform. He stated he was pleased to announce a full and immediate ceasefire between India and Pakistan, congratulating both countries for their "Common Sense and Great Intelligence."
Pakistan's Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar confirmed the ceasefire on Geo News, acknowledging the significant roles played by Saudi Arabia and Turkey in facilitating the agreement.
Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri reported that the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both countries had spoken on Saturday afternoon. "It was agreed between them that both sides would stop all firing and military action on land, and in the air and sea. Instructions have been given on both sides to give effect to this understanding," Misri stated. He added that the top military officials are scheduled to meet again on May 12th.
This agreement brings a swift end to the recent military escalation. Earlier on Saturday, India reported targeting Pakistani air bases after Islamabad launched several high-speed missiles at military and civilian infrastructure in India's Punjab state. Pakistan claimed to have intercepted most of these missiles and responded with retaliatory strikes against India.
