DHAKA, Feb 6, (V7N) – Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir (BICS) President Nurul Islam Saddam today said the organisation’s activities and growth have continued despite years of repression, propaganda and persecution.

“Despite facing oppression, false propaganda, torture and killings, the progress of Islami Chhatra Shibir could not be halted,” he said, adding that the organisation continues to move forward amid what he described as political and institutional challenges.

He was speaking at a discussion organised to mark the 49th founding anniversary of BICS at the Mozaffar Ahmed Chowdhury Auditorium of the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Dhaka.

Referring to the report of the Commission on Enforced Disappearance, Saddam said Chhatra Shibir members were among the most affected, claiming that 31 percent of enforced disappearances during the previous regime involved the organisation.

He reiterated that Islami Chhatra Shibir remains committed to developing honest, skilled and patriotic citizens.

The programme was presided over by Dhaka University BICS President Muhiuddin Khan. Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) General Secretary SM Farhad and DUCSU Transport Secretary Asif Abdullah addressed the discussion titled “Islami Chhatra Shibir in Bangladesh: A Journey of Struggle, Sacrifice and Dedication”. DU BICS Secretary Kazi Ashiq moderated the event.

In his remarks, Asif Abdullah said the prevailing political situation had prevented him from staying in university dormitories, adding that he aspired to freely express his views on campus.

SM Farhad said the current position of Islami Chhatra Shibir is the result of long-standing sacrifice and dedication by its members, noting that organisational activities and training programmes continued despite sustained pressure.

In his concluding remarks, Muhiuddin Khan said the organisation would continue working towards what he described as an equitable, law-based and morally grounded Bangladesh.
