Dhaka, Jan 10 (V7N) — BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has accused the Awami League government of destroying the country's institutions over the past 15 years, citing the sports sector as a glaring example. He claimed that the ruling party has politicised the sports arena, depriving talented players of opportunities.

Fakhrul made these remarks on Friday while speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of the Zia Inter-Station Football Tournament at the Pallabi City Club Ground in Dhaka.

“We need to cultivate talent so that everyone gets a fair chance,” Fakhrul said. He emphasised the need to identify and nurture skilled players, urging for a revival of football’s former glory. "Football was once a very popular sport, though cricket is more prominent now," he added.

Highlighting the role of athletes in society, Fakhrul said, “Players have generous hearts and play a big role in social initiatives, including the fight against drugs. This aligns with Tarique Rahman’s vision to steer the youth away from drugs and engage them in sports.”

Fakhrul also credited the late Arafat Rahman Koko for cricket's rise in Bangladesh, stating, “The excellence of cricket was achieved due to Koko’s contributions.”

The tournament's opening event drew local sports enthusiasts and community leaders, reflecting the BNP’s commitment to promoting sports and youth engagement.
