Jessore, Feb 19, (V7N) – Former Member of Parliament (MP) from Jhenaidah-3 (Maheshpur-Kotchandpur) and Awami League leader Major General (Retd.) Salahuddin Miazi was arrested on Tuesday night in Jessore. During the arrest, his brother-in-law Zakir Hossain was also taken into custody by law enforcement agencies.
Since evening, Miazi and his brother-in-law were surrounded by members of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement at Shyamolchhaya Park in Rudrapur village, Jessore, which is owned by Miazi. Later, local villagers joined the protest. Upon receiving information, security forces, including the army and police, arrived at the scene. After discussions with the agitated students, Miazi and his brother-in-law were taken into custody at around 11:30 PM.
Police informed that they were taken to the Jessore Detective Branch (DB) office. Kazi Babul Hossain, the Investigation Officer of Jessore Kotwali Police Station, stated, "After receiving the report, the joint forces went to the location and took Salahuddin Miazi and his brother-in-law into custody. Further legal proceedings are underway."
Salahuddin Miazi, a former military secretary to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, had been elected as a Member of Parliament for Jhenaidah-3 (Maheshpur-Kotchandpur) in the 12th general election. He has been accused of illegally occupying hundreds of acres of land in Jessore’s Rudrapur-Tetulia and Maheshpur areas in Jhenaidah.
Locals and witnesses reported that Miazi and his brother-in-law had been hiding at their Shyamolchhaya Park for a long time. On Tuesday evening, members of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and the National Citizens Committee, along with some locals, surrounded the main gate of the park and attempted to enter. Upon receiving the information, police and joint forces went to the scene and tried to calm the protesting students. The demonstrators demanded the immediate arrest of Salahuddin Miazi, stating that they would not leave the site until their demand was met. Eventually, around 10:45 PM, joint forces took Miazi and his brother-in-law into custody.
Rashed Khan, the convener of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Jessore, stated, "Upon hearing that Miazi, a puppet MP of Sheikh Hasina, was hiding, local villagers and students gathered at the park. Miazi’s men attempted to assault them. Upon hearing the news, activists from the Anti-Discrimination Movement and local villagers gathered and started protesting. Later, with our cooperation, law enforcement took action and arrested them."
