Dhaka, Oct 10 (V7N) – Despite an official ban on all political activities, supporters of the Awami League, the recently ousted party, have been staging brief, sudden processions in various parts of the country — prompting mass arrests and heightened police vigilance.

Law enforcement sources report that more than 1,000 Awami League activists have been arrested in Dhaka alone over the past six months, many in connection with older cases. Intelligence officials warn that the group may be planning acts of sabotage in the capital and other regions throughout October.

Witnesses and video footage circulating on social media platforms, including Facebook, show small groups of activists assembling without notice, chanting slogans, and dispersing within minutes. In some incidents, crude explosive devices were reportedly detonated.

Police officials said that despite the ban, several activists continue to post videos online to assert their political presence. In response, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has intensified patrols and intelligence operations across the city.

“We are always ready. The DMP has the capacity to handle any situation,” said DC Muhammad Talebur Rahman, of DMP’s Media Department. “Patrols and intelligence surveillance have been strengthened to ensure peace and security.”

Amid these developments, several officers from Dhanmondi, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, and Mohammadpur police stations have reportedly been transferred following their failure to contain earlier incidents.

Political analyst Dr. Touhidul Haque told Voice7 News that a visible and fair trial of the Awami League leadership for alleged human rights violations and crimes committed during their tenure is now essential.

“Without completing the trial process before the election, the outcome could be unpredictable,” Dr. Haque said. “Many party members still express intentions to disrupt the upcoming elections on social media. Such rhetoric may discourage voter participation and undermine the democratic process.”

Police, however, maintain that any attempt to incite unrest or disrupt the election process will be dealt with firmly and without compromise.
