Dhaka, Mar 17 (V7N) — The 106th birth anniversary of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding leader of Bangladesh, is being observed today.
Born on March 17, 1920, in Tungipara village of Gopalganj, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was the son of Sheikh Lutfar Rahman and Sayera Khatun. He became involved in politics from an early age and faced imprisonment during his youth due to his activism.
Over time, he emerged as a central Political figure, playing a key role in the Bengali struggle for independence. His historic speech at the Race Course Maidan on March 7, 1971, is widely regarded as a turning point in the movement for independence.
He was arrested by Pakistani forces on the night of March 25, 1971, during the crackdown that led to the Bangladesh Liberation War. Following a nine-month war, Bangladesh achieved independence on December 16, 1971.
After independence, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman led the country until he was assassinated along with most of his family members on August 15, 1975.
The day has been observed in various ways over the years. In previous times, particularly during the tenure of Sheikh Hasina, the anniversary was marked with elaborate state programs. However, following political changes after the events of August 5, 2024, the day has been observed in a more subdued manner in recent years.
