Dhaka, May 09 (V7N) — Nahid Islam, convener of the National Citizens Party (NCP), has accused the BNP-led government of creating confusion over the implementation of the July Charter and reform initiatives.
He made the remarks while speaking at an NCP dialogue on the ongoing deadlock over reforms and the future course of action at a hotel in the capital on Saturday (May 9).
Nahid Islam said the government has not yet taken a clear position regarding the implementation of the July Charter.
“The government says it will implement the July Charter, but it is still not clear when, how, and within what timeframe it will be implemented,” he said, alleging that the government is “playing tricks” on the issue.
He also claimed that a political deadlock has emerged in the country and said the government must take responsibility for resolving it.
“We want to overcome this deadlock, and the government will have to take responsibility for that. From our position, we are continuing our efforts,” Nahid Islam added.
The NCP convener warned that if there is no opportunity for meaningful discussion on reforms, peaceful political movements could become more intense in the future.
“How difficult the movement becomes will depend on the government’s response,” he said.
Nahid Islam further alleged that due to the absence of institutional reforms, ordinary citizens are still not benefiting from expected changes. He also expressed concern over the country’s law and order situation, human rights conditions, and what he described as continuing distrust in the political arena.
