Dhaka, Jul 01 (V7N) — Nahid Islam, convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and Opposition Chief Whip, has said that merely celebrating July without meaningful action is not enough, arguing that the aspirations of the July Uprising remain unfulfilled.

Speaking after visiting the mass graves of those killed during the July Movement at Rayerbazar in Dhaka on Wednesday morning, Nahid Islam said justice for those killed and injured has yet to be delivered.

"Since this government assumed office, verdicts have been delivered in only two cases related to the July Movement. The pace of justice remains slow," he said.

The visit marked the beginning of the NCP's 36-day nationwide programme commemorating the second anniversary of the July Uprising. Nahid urged authorities to preserve the graves of those who lost their lives during the movement.

He announced that the party would continue nationwide programmes centered on "July" until August 5.

Nahid also called for the rehabilitation of those injured during the July Movement, implementation of the proposed July Charter, and reforms to the country's state structure.

He further demanded the opening of the July National Museum, warning that if it is not inaugurated by August 5, "the people will open it themselves." He added that the government must demonstrate its commitment to the ideals of the July Uprising.

Commenting on the recent conviction of Hasanul Haque Inu, the president of JASAD and former information minister, on charges of crimes against humanity, Nahid said a 10-year prison sentence was insufficient and expressed hope that the verdict would be appealed.

He also urged the government and the tribunal to expedite trials related to the July Movement and called for former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to be brought back to Bangladesh to face legal proceedings.
