Dhaka, Sep 19 (V7N) – Kazi Zafar Ullah, a presidium member of the ruling Awami League, has been arrested by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). His arrest was confirmed on Thursday morning by Mohammad Talebur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner of DMP's Media and Public Relations Department.

Kazi Zafar Ullah was taken into custody from Gulshan, Dhaka, late on Wednesday night, though no further details about the charges were immediately provided.

A veteran politician, Zafar Ullah was elected as a Member of Parliament for the then Faridpur-5 constituency in 2001 under the Awami League’s banner. However, he was defeated in the subsequent elections in 2014 and 2018 by independent candidate Mojibur Rahman Chowdhury Nixon in the Faridpur-4 seat, where he ran with the Awami League’s boat symbol. His defeat was repeated in the 2024 elections.

This arrest follows a series of detentions of Awami League leaders since the resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5, 2024, after a student uprising. Many high-ranking officials, ministers, and parliamentarians have been taken into custody as part of the ongoing crackdown.

Zafar Ullah was a prominent figure in the party, serving as a member of the party's Presidium and the Local Government and Parliamentary Nomination Board. His political influence was cemented during the 20th National Conference of the Awami League in 2016, where he was elected to the party's top policy-making body.
