Savar, Sep 19 (V7N) – Shamim Mollah (38), a former student of Jahangirnagar University and ex-leader of the Bangladesh Chhatra League, has died after being beaten by a group of students. He passed away while receiving treatment at Gonoshasthaya Samaj-based Medical College Hospital in Savar on Wednesday night.

Inspector Abu Bakr Siddique of Ashulia Police Station confirmed his death around midnight, stating that Mollah, a resident of Kathgara Mollabari in Ashulia Union, had been involved in an altercation earlier in the day.

Mollah, a former organizational secretary of the Jahangirnagar University Chhatra League branch and a member of the university's 39th batch, was accused of leading an attack on protesting students at the residence of the university’s Vice-Chancellor on July 15. This led to a confrontation on Wednesday when a group of students, alleging his involvement in the previous attack, apprehended him near the Jai Bangla Gate of the university. After beating him, they handed him over to the university's proctorial team, who later transferred him to police custody.

Eyewitnesses reported that students first identified Mollah at a shop near the university gate, where they apprehended and assaulted him. Despite the intervention of the university’s security team, Mollah was reportedly beaten again while in custody.

Shamim Mollah had a controversial reputation among the student body. According to several students, he was involved in various criminal activities, including controlling a drug syndicate, land grabbing, and extortion in areas near the university. Four legal cases were pending against him, and he was accused of leading the attack on the anti-discrimination students during the July 15 incident.

University officials, including Sudipta Shaheen, head of the university’s security wing, confirmed that Mollah had been rescued by security personnel and taken to the proctor's office before being handed over to the police. Inspector Abu Bakr Siddique added that Mollah was admitted to the hospital around 9:30 p.m. but succumbed to his injuries during treatment. While the cause of death is believed to be from the beatings, the exact cause will be confirmed following a post-mortem examination.
