Jan 10, (V7N) - Novak Djokovic has made a striking claim that he was "poisoned" with lead and mercury in his food during his detention in Melbourne in 2022. In an interview with GQ magazine, Djokovic revealed that after returning to Serbia, medical tests showed unusually high levels of heavy metals in his system. He believes this contamination could only have occurred through the food he consumed at the Park Hotel, where he was held while contesting his visa cancellation over his refusal to get vaccinated against COVID-19.
Australia's Department of Home Affairs declined to comment on Djokovic's claims, citing privacy reasons. However, the government maintains that detainees at the Park Hotel were provided with freshly cooked, nutritious meals that met dietary and medical requirements.
Despite the controversy, Djokovic expressed no resentment toward the Australian public, highlighting the support he has received since the incident. He acknowledged that many Australians had apologized for how he was treated and appreciated the reinstatement of his visa. Djokovic went on to win the Australian Open in 2023 and is now preparing to compete for his 11th Australian Open title and a record 25th Grand Slam.
