NEW YORK, Jun 18 (V7N) – Portugal were held to a surprising 1-1 draw by Congo in their opening match of the FIFA World Cup, as the African side marked their return to the tournament after a 52-year absence with a memorable result.
Portugal made a dream start when midfielder Joao Neves found the net in the sixth minute from a pass by Neto. The goal was Neves' fourth for the national team and appeared to set the Portuguese on course for a comfortable victory.
However, Congo responded strongly and drew level just before halftime. Newcastle United midfielder Ivan Wisser rose highest to meet Arthur Masuaku's cross from the right wing, powering a header past the Portuguese goalkeeper to make it 1-1.
Portugal thought they had restored their lead early in the second half when Joao Cancelo produced a superb finish in the 55th minute. The celebrations were short-lived, though, as the goal was ruled out for offside following a VAR review.
The Portuguese dominated possession and launched repeated attacks in the closing stages, but Congo's disciplined defense frustrated Roberto Martinez's side and secured a valuable point.
The match also saw Cristiano Ronaldo equal Lionel Messi's record of appearing in six consecutive FIFA World Cups. At 41 years and 132 days old, Ronaldo became the oldest outfield player to start a World Cup match for Portugal, adding another milestone to his illustrious career.
Portugal will look to bounce back in their second Group Stage match against Uzbekistan on Tuesday, June 23. The match is scheduled to kick off at 11:00 p.m. Bangladesh time.
