New York, July 17 (V7N) — Argentina and Spain will meet in the FIFA World Cup final on July 19 at the New York–New Jersey Stadium, setting up a showdown between the South American giants and the reigning European champions.

After defeating England to reach the final, La Albiceleste now face one of their toughest tests against Spain. Beyond deciding the world title, the match will also break the deadlock in one of international football's most evenly matched rivalries.

Even Head-to-Head Record

Argentina and Spain have faced each other 14 times, with both nations winning six matches each, while two encounters ended in draws. Their 15th meeting will therefore not only determine the 2026 World Cup champions but also give one side the overall advantage in the head-to-head record.

Spain Won the Last Meeting

The two teams last met in an international friendly on March 27, 2018, at Madrid's Metropolitano Stadium, where Spain cruised to a 6-1 victory over Argentina.

Several members of Argentina's current squad—including Giovani Lo Celso, Nicolás Otamendi, Lautaro Martínez, Leandro Paredes and Nicolás Tagliafico—featured in that match. Captain Lionel Messi missed the game because of a right adductor muscle injury.

Later that year, Argentina were eliminated by eventual champions France in the Round of 16 at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Only One Previous World Cup Meeting

Argentina and Spain have met only once in FIFA World Cup history.

That encounter came during the 1966 World Cup group stage, when Argentina defeated Spain 2-1, with Luis Artime scoring both goals. Coached by Juan Carlos Lorenzo, Argentina advanced from the group but were later eliminated by hosts England in the quarter-finals.

Finalissima Still Awaiting

Apart from the World Cup final, another high-profile clash between the two nations is still pending.

As the reigning champions of South America and Europe, Argentina and Spain were scheduled to contest the Finalissima, but the match—originally planned for March 27 in Qatar—was postponed because of the security situation in the Middle East. A new date has yet to be announced.

The only previous edition of the Finalissima under its current format was held in 2022, when Argentina defeated Italy at Wembley Stadium to lift the trophy.

More Than a World Cup Final

Saturday's final in New York–New Jersey will decide not only the 2026 FIFA World Cup champions but also which nation takes the lead in the all-time rivalry between two of international football's most successful teams. With history perfectly balanced, the winner will claim both the world's biggest football prize and a symbolic edge in one of the sport's most compelling head-to-head contests.
