Lisbon, Oct 06 (V7N) — Migrant workers will no longer be able to enter Portugal without a work visa, and those who manage to enter irregularly will not have the opportunity to regularize their status, according to a new decision by the Portuguese government. This change is in line with European regulations, but analysts warn it may impact the country’s economy.

The news, first reported by Deutsche Welle, indicates that irregular migrant workers will no longer be allowed to stay in Portugal while applying for work visas. The move has raised concerns among immigration advocates, who believe the government's tightening of policies is a response to pressure from right-wing groups rallying against migrants.

Rui Armindo Freitas, head of Portugal's immigration policy and deputy minister, explained that the decision was aimed at reducing the flow of irregular migration. "Many irregular migrant workers are drawn to Portugal by the possibility of entering the country and later obtaining the necessary documents. This opportunity should be closed soon," Freitas said.

One major issue has been the backlog of applications for regularization, with the immigration agency AIMA revealing that around 40,000 such applications are still awaiting scrutiny. Some of these applications were submitted over two years ago. The government aims to clear this backlog by next June.

NGO representatives have expressed concern over the new measures, claiming that it will leave thousands of migrant workers in limbo and hinder their ability to contribute to the economy. Despite this, the government remains committed to addressing the long-standing issues within the immigration system.

The changes come as Portugal continues to navigate its role within the broader context of European migration policy, with the government balancing regulatory compliance and domestic political pressures.
