LONDON, Dec 30, (V7N) – Adverse weather conditions have forced the cancellation of major New Year celebrations across the UK, including Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay street party and fireworks displays in Blackpool.
Edinburgh’s Hogmanay Street Party Cancelled
The Hogmanay celebrations, a staple of Scotland's New Year festivities, were set to attract approximately 30,000 attendees with a fireworks show and a headline performance by the Scottish band Texas. However, organisers announced the cancellation of outdoor events scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, citing "ongoing high winds and inclement weather" as threats to public safety.
In Blackpool, a popular holiday destination in northwestern England, local authorities also called off planned New Year fireworks due to forecasts of high winds.
The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) issued an urgent severe flood warning for parts of Scotland, describing a "danger to life" situation in areas such as Aviemore and nearby regions in the Scottish Highlands.
River Spey Flood Risk: SEPA warned that heavy rainfall could cause the River Spey to overflow, leading to serious flooding of properties and businesses throughout Monday night and into Tuesday morning.
Met Office Alerts: The UK Met Office has issued a series of weather warnings for heavy rain, strong winds, and snow in Scotland, Northern Ireland, and northern England.
An amber warning, indicating a potential risk to life, has been issued for parts of Scotland due to rain and snow. Yellow warnings for rain, wind, and snow cover much of northern England and Scotland.
Impact on Travel and Local Communities
The severe weather has disrupted travel plans, with flooding and icy conditions expected to impact roads and public transport. Communities in northern Scotland, particularly in flood-prone areas, are bracing for potential property damage and evacuations.
Met Office meteorologist Steve Willington warned of “potentially disruptive weather” over the coming days as a series of low-pressure systems move across the UK.
"Almost the entire UK is covered by at least one weather warning," he said, emphasizing the need for vigilance.
Authorities are urging residents to stay informed about weather updates, avoid non-essential travel in affected areas, and take precautions to protect property and personal safety.
