West bangle, June 13 (V7N) — West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has written to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing deep concern over the recent vandalism of the historic Rabindra Kachari Bari in Shahjadpur, Sirajganj, Bangladesh. The site is closely linked to the legacy of Nobel laureate poet Rabindranath Tagore.

In her letter, Mamata called the incident “unfortunate” and urged the Prime Minister to address the matter firmly with the Bangladesh government. She emphasized that the vandalism is an attack on the cultural heritage of Bengal and its literary legacy.

Mamata wrote, “Those responsible for this heinous act must be brought to justice. There should be international protest to prevent such incidents in the future.”

The incident occurred on Tuesday following a verbal altercation between a visitor and security personnel, which escalated to attacks on the windows and doors of the auditorium at the site.

The Rabindra Kachari Bari, built in Indo-European architectural style, was once the estate home of Prince Dwarkanath Tagore—grandfather of Rabindranath Tagore—and served as a place Rabindranath himself visited. The building has been a protected monument since 1969, declared by the Bangladesh Department of Archaeology.

The Indian government has also demanded strict action against those responsible.
