Alaska, July 17 (V7N) – A strong earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of Alaska on Thursday, triggering a tsunami warning for the region, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
The tremor’s epicenter was near Popoff Island, close to the city of Sand Point. The earthquake shook the area strongly, causing sirens to sound and widespread panic among local residents.
Following the quake, the meteorological department issued a tsunami warning, urging residents in coastal and low-lying areas to evacuate to higher ground as a precautionary measure. Later, the emergency warning was lifted after assessments showed no imminent tsunami threat.
Authorities continue to advise residents to remain cautious and stay away from vulnerable zones until further notice.
No reports of damage or casualties have been confirmed so far.
