Nigeria's oil-producing southern Delta state witnessed a tragic incident as at least 16 soldiers lost their lives while attempting to quell sectarian clashes. A spokesperson for the Nigerian Army confirmed the incident on Saturday.

Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, in a statement reported by British news agency Reuters, disclosed that an army team was dispatched to intervene in the riots. However, the situation escalated as the enraged crowd turned violent and attacked the soldiers.

Gusau lamented that among the casualties were 12 soldiers, including the commanding officer, two majors, and one captain. The spokesperson emphasized that an investigation has been ordered to determine the perpetrators of the attack and the underlying causes of the clashes. Immediate arrests have also been made as part of the ongoing investigation.

Clashes between communities in Delta State are not uncommon, often resulting in fatalities. The incident underscores the persistent tensions and challenges faced by authorities in maintaining peace and stability in the region.
