Dhaka, Aug 25 (V7N) – Muhammad Fauzul Kabir Khan, Advisor to the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges, announced that 1,500 kilometers of highways and roads across Bangladesh in poor condition will be renovated by December. The advisor noted that the current cost of road construction is about 30 percent higher than necessary, and a review committee has been formed to reduce expenses while maintaining quality.

The announcement came after a meeting on the overall situation and location of highways held at the Secretariat on Monday afternoon.

Fauzul Kabir Khan said, “I regret that the public is suffering due to the condition of the roads. Renovation work will begin after the monsoon ends and is expected to be completed between September and December. This will not be done irresponsibly by just clearing debris.”

The advisor also highlighted that old and unfit vehicles are being removed to restore order. Loans may be provided to vehicle owners under easy terms if necessary. Talks are ongoing with the Ministry of Commerce to introduce reforms in car import policies.

He further stated that autorickshaws illegally charging electricity have been instructed to stop such practices by the Electricity Department. While taking measures against misuse, alternative employment solutions for affected drivers are also being considered.

Regarding road construction costs, Fauzul Kabir Khan said the review committee will focus on reducing expenses without compromising quality. Efforts will also be made to reinforce roads that are particularly susceptible to water and flood damage using concrete.
