Washington, May 02 (V7N)- The United States has decided to withdraw 5,000 troops from NATO ally Germany, the Pentagon confirmed on Friday, marking a significant shift in its military posture in Europe.

According to reports by Reuters, the withdrawal will be carried out under the directive of US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and is expected to be completed within the next 6 to 12 months.

Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell stated that approximately 36,400 US troops are currently stationed in Germany, representing the largest American military presence in Europe. The planned reduction is being viewed as part of Washington’s broader strategic recalibration amid growing disagreements with the NATO alliance.

The move comes in the wake of recent diplomatic tensions. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz publicly criticized US President Donald Trump over his stance on the ongoing Iran conflict, suggesting that Iran had outmaneuvered Washington in negotiations.

Trump reportedly reacted strongly to the remarks, warning of a potential reduction of US troop presence in Europe—an indication that now appears to be materializing.

Analysts believe the decision could have broader implications for transatlantic relations and NATO’s collective defense strategy at a time of heightened geopolitical uncertainty.
