Beijing, May 15 (V7N) – The Donald Trump has said that the United States and China now share “nearly identical positions” on the Iran issue following the second round of high-level talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday (May 15).
The closed-door meeting, held at Beijing’s historic Zhongnanhai compound, took place under tight security with only a limited number of officials allowed inside. Journalists were largely barred from the discussions.
Trade Agreements and Diplomatic Tone
Trump described the talks as “highly productive,” claiming that several major trade agreements were signed between the two economic superpowers. However, neither side released specific details of the deals.
Xi Jinping reportedly called the visit “historic and groundbreaking,” adding that the talks had elevated bilateral relations to what he described as an “unprecedented level of strategic stability.”
Iran and Security Issues Discussed
According to Trump, discussions also covered the ongoing Iran conflict. He claimed that both Washington and Beijing agreed on the need to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and to keep global trade routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, open.
Trump said:
“The positions of the two countries on ending the war are almost the same. We do not want Iran to have nuclear weapons.”
Symbolic Diplomacy
The meeting began with a tea ceremony and a one-on-one discussion between the two leaders. Xi Jinping also reportedly toured Trump around Zhongnanhai before hosting a working lunch.
As a symbolic gesture, Xi is said to have presented Trump with rose seeds as a diplomatic gift, signaling what Chinese officials described as a “new phase” in bilateral relations.
The US president departed Beijing following the conclusion of the visit, with both sides projecting cautious optimism about future cooperation despite long-standing geopolitical tensions.
