New York, May 25 (V7N)- US President Donald Trump has urged negotiators not to rush into a potential agreement with Iran, even after earlier suggesting that a deal between Washington and Tehran was close to completion.

The proposed agreement reportedly includes a temporary ceasefire extension, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and continued negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme. Trump said in a social media post that discussions were progressing “constructively,” but stressed that both sides need time to reach a final conclusion.

On Saturday (May 23), Trump had claimed that a deal to end the ongoing conflict with Iran was “nearly final” and would be announced soon, adding that the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened as part of the agreement. However, subsequent remarks indicate a more cautious stance, with warnings that military action could resume if no deal is reached within a short timeframe.

Iranian officials have also acknowledged movement in negotiations. Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghai said the two sides were “very close” to an agreement, while noting that significant gaps still remain in the talks.

According to US media reports, key issues such as sanctions relief, the release of frozen Iranian assets, and the future of Iran’s nuclear programme remain unresolved and are expected to be addressed in further discussions.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, speaking during his visit to India, confirmed that talks are ongoing. He said that while some progress may be visible, a final agreement will require more time and careful negotiation.

Rubio also noted that the proposed framework under discussion includes keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and setting a structured timeline for nuclear-related negotiations. He added that several international partners, including Gulf states, are broadly supportive of the diplomatic efforts.

Officials on both sides have emphasized that while momentum exists, major political and technical differences still need to be resolved before any formal deal can be announced.
