Washington, May 27 (V7N)- The United States has witnessed a significant decline in foreign tourist arrivals in 2025, marking the first major year-on-year drop in international visitors since the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to a report published by CNN, nearly 4 million fewer foreign tourists visited the United States this year compared to 2024, resulting in an estimated loss of more than $8 billion for the country’s tourism industry.
Analysts say the downturn is not linked to a global recession or health crisis, but rather to policy decisions and political positions that have negatively affected international perceptions of the United States.
Experts have pointed to stricter immigration policies and a tougher stance toward foreigners as key reasons behind the decline.
Tourism specialists also noted that weakening trust and changing global perceptions about the United States are directly affecting the country’s attractiveness as a travel destination.
Juliet Kayyem, a senior analyst at Harvard Kennedy School, said the international image of the United States is changing in ways that could harm the country’s long-term global standing.
The report further highlighted proposed visa fee increases, rising airfares, and budget cuts to Brand USA as additional factors contributing to the slowdown in tourism.
According to the World Travel and Tourism Council, while international tourism has grown in many parts of the world, the United States has experienced the opposite trend, signaling a decline in its appeal as a global travel destination.
Experts warn that if the trend continues, the long-term impact could extend beyond tourism, affecting the broader US economy and the country’s global influence.
