MOSCOW, Jun 18 (V7N) – Iran has signed an agreement with Russia to purchase 21 Mi-171 helicopters that will be used for humanitarian relief, emergency response, and logistics operations, according to Russian state media reports.
The agreement was formally signed in Moscow on Wednesday between representatives of the Iranian Red Crescent Society and a Russian delegation, state-run news agency TASS reported.
Under the terms of the deal, Iran is expected to receive the first four helicopters from the shipment by March next year, marking the beginning of a broader delivery program aimed at strengthening the country's emergency response capabilities.
Officials said the Mi-171 helicopters will be equipped with advanced night-vision technology, enabling rescue and transport operations to be conducted effectively in low-light and nighttime conditions.
The aircraft will also be fitted with specialized firefighting equipment, expanding their role in disaster management and emergency relief efforts. The added capabilities are expected to enhance Iran's ability to respond to natural disasters, wildfires, and humanitarian emergencies across the country.
The Mi-171 is a multi-purpose helicopter widely used for transport, search-and-rescue missions, medical evacuation, and cargo operations. Its ability to operate in challenging weather and terrain conditions has made it one of Russia's most widely exported helicopter models.
The agreement reflects ongoing cooperation between Tehran and Moscow in the fields of aviation, emergency services, and logistics, amid growing bilateral ties between the two countries.
Further details regarding the financial terms of the contract were not immediately disclosed.
