In response to the recent air attack on the Iranian consulate building in Damascus, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has launched a significant missile and drone attack targeting Israeli military installations. The mission, named 'True Promise', was carried out on Saturday night, according to a statement released by the IRGC.
The retaliatory strike comes in retaliation for the killing of seven Iranian military advisers, including two brigadier generals, in an Israeli attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus on April 1. The IRGC's Aerospace Division reportedly launched hundreds of drones and missiles at Israeli military installations.
While Iran-based media, including press Today, have confirmed the attack, Israel has yet to release any information regarding casualties or damage incurred. Iran's Defense Minister, Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Ashtiani, warned that any Middle Eastern country allowing Israel to use its territory or airspace for attacks against Iran would face strict measures.
The IRGC statement emphasized that diplomatic missions around the world are protected under UN law, but Tehran's decision to retaliate was prompted by the failure of the UN Security Council to condemn the attack on its consulate in Damascus. Strategic intelligence capabilities were reportedly used in the attack, targeting and destroying Israeli military installations.
Furthermore, the IRGC's statement warned the United States, Israel's main sponsor, that any US involvement in attempts to harm Iran's interests would result in decisive and regrettable strikes on US targets in the Middle East. Iran held the United States fully responsible for Israel's actions and warned against allowing any third country to use its soil to attack Iran.
Following Tehran's threat of retaliation, Israel bolstered its military readiness, canceling the leave of combat units, strengthening air and air defense systems, and summoning reserve troops. At least 28 embassies or consulates have also been temporarily closed as a precautionary measure.
The escalation of tensions between Iran and Israel underscores the volatile situation in the region, with both sides preparing for potential conflict.
