Tragedy struck at Portugal's largest aviation event when two aircraft collided mid-air, resulting in the death of a Spanish pilot. The incident occurred in the city of Beja, approximately 180 kilometers south of Lisbon, during an air show hosted by the Portuguese Air Force (PAV).
According to a report by British newspaper The Telegraph, six aircraft were participating in the air show when the collision occurred. The two Yak-52 aircraft collided in mid-flight, leading to a catastrophic explosion and fire that destroyed one of the planes. The Spanish pilot aboard that plane did not survive the crash.
The pilot of the other Yak-52 aircraft managed to land safely despite sustaining injuries. In light of the incident, the Portuguese Air Force has announced the cancellation of the Beja Air Show.
This tragic event has cast a shadow over what was supposed to be a celebration of aviation, highlighting the inherent risks involved in such displays.
