Chennai, 23 June 2024 — The death toll from a toxic liquor incident in Tamil Nadu has risen to 55, with at least 90 people still hospitalized, some in critical condition. This information was reported by Indian media outlet NDTV.

On the night of Tuesday, June 18, more than a hundred people fell ill after consuming alcohol in Kallakurichi district. The victims were quickly taken to hospitals, but many succumbed to the poisoning.

In response to the tragedy, local authorities have arrested 10 individuals suspected of selling the toxic brew. Among the arrested is a man named Kannukutty, who is believed to be a key figure in the distribution of the illicit alcohol. Law enforcement officials have seized approximately 200 liters of illegal liquor, known locally as "packet arrack," from his possession. The seized alcohol was reportedly either expired or lacked proper approval.

The Deputy Commissioner of Kallakuruchi has been transferred for negligence related to the incident, and at least 19 officials, including the District Superintendent of Police, have been dismissed from their posts. These actions reflect the government's efforts to address the severe lapse in regulation and oversight that allowed the distribution of the toxic liquor.

The police investigation continues as authorities work to identify and apprehend others involved in the production and sale of the toxic liquor. The community remains in shock as families mourn the loss of their loved ones and seek answers about how such a tragedy could occur.

This incident highlights the critical need for stricter regulation and enforcement of liquor laws to prevent such occurrences in the future. The state government has vowed to take all necessary measures to ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens.
