Rajshahi, July 5 (V7N) — The annual Rath Mela in Rajshahi, a vibrant event attracting traders from near and far, is facing serious allegations of extortion by groups of local youths. The week-long fair, held along both sides of the road from Kalpona Cinema Mor to Bottola Mor in Sagarpara area, is now entering its final days, with the much-anticipated Ulto Rath procession scheduled for Saturday, July 5.

Despite the fair’s festive atmosphere with around 250 stalls selling toys, furniture, sweets, and other goods, traders complain of coercive demands for protection money. Local youth, some claiming political affiliations, have been forcing vendors to pay extortion fees ranging from 200 to 10,000 taka. Traders who refuse to comply report threats and denial of stall space.

Historically, the Rath Mela, with over a century of tradition, was previously held at Aluppatti but moved to Sagarpara two decades ago due to road development. Earlier instances of extortion had prompted intervention by Rajshahi Metropolitan Jubo Dal leaders who conducted inspections and discouraged the practice through public announcements. However, the issue has resurfaced with different groups now allegedly involved.

Businessmen attending from Rajshahi’s suburbs and distant districts like Natore, Bogura, Sirajganj, and Kushtia express frustration at the escalating demands. One trader revealed initial demands of 5,000 taka, which were later reduced but persist as daily extortion fees of 200-500 taka, including charges on mobile vendors.

Rath Mela organizer Bimal Sarkar acknowledged that while smaller sums were traditionally collected for security and hospitality, recent demands of 10,000 to 20,000 taka are unprecedented and concerning. He urged police and administration to take action.

Rajshahi Metropolitan BNP coordinator Ershad Ali Isha assured strict measures to curb extortion, confirming that local leaders have warned traders via public announcements and promised disciplinary action against offenders.

Boalia Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mostak Hossain confirmed no formal complaints had yet been received, but police remain vigilant and ready to act swiftly on any reported extortion cases.

The Rath Mela, a major cultural and commercial event, now awaits decisive action from authorities to restore its festive spirit free from harassment and corruption.
