Tehran, August 9 — In a shocking wave of executions, Iran has reportedly hanged 29 prisoners in a single day, according to a report by the country's media, Iran International. The executions took place last Wednesday, with 26 of the prisoners being executed at Gezelhesar Prison and three at Karaj Central Jail.
The Norway-based Iran Human Rights Organization (HRNGO) has confirmed the mass execution, raising concerns over the timing of these actions. Mahmoud Amiri-Moghaddam, director of HRNGO, stated, "The Islamic Republic of Iran executed these prisoners by exploiting the global focus on Iran's tensions with Israel." The statement suggests that the Iranian government may have used the international community's preoccupation with geopolitical issues as an opportunity to carry out the executions with less global scrutiny.
Of the 29 executed individuals, 17 were convicted of murder, seven were charged with drug-related offenses, and three were sentenced for rape. The executions highlight the harsh application of capital punishment in Iran, particularly for crimes involving drugs and serious offenses like murder and rape.
HRNGO has also reported receiving information about the execution of two additional women on the same day. However, the authenticity of this report has not yet been confirmed. If true, this would further increase the number of executions carried out by the Iranian regime in a single day.
The mass execution has sparked outrage among human rights organizations and advocates worldwide. Iran has long been criticized for its use of the death penalty, particularly in cases involving questionable judicial practices and lack of fair trials. This latest round of executions is likely to intensify calls for international intervention and increased scrutiny of Iran's human rights record.
As the world continues to focus on Iran's external conflicts, the internal situation regarding human rights abuses remains dire. The HRNGO and other organizations continue to monitor the situation closely, urging the global community to hold Iran accountable for these actions.
