Hamas wanted the release of high-profile Palestinians in the prisoner exchange deal. The list includes prominent freedom fighters like Abdullah Barghouti, Abbas Al Saeed, Marwan Barghouti. Many of these Palestinians imprisoned in Israel for decades have been sentenced to life imprisonment. Even, one got a sentence of 5 thousand two hundred years.
It is known that Abdullah Barghouti, the famous bomb expert of Qashem Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, has been imprisoned in Israel for more than two decades. He is accused of killing at least 66 people in multiple attacks during the Second Intifada. As punishment, 67 life sentences were given along with another 5,200 years of imprisonment. It is believed to be the longest sentence in human history, not to mention the history of Israel.
Israeli media say that Hamas wants the release of this leader in the prisoner exchange agreement. The group has sought the release of not only Abdullah Barghouti, but also several other high-profile Palestinians. Among which the most discussed are Abbas Al Saeed, Ibrahim Hamad, Ahmed Sadat and Muhammad Arman. Hamas even stipulated the release of Marwan Barghouti, the leader of its rival Fatah movement, in the deal.
All these prisoners are serving life sentences. Among them, Qassem Brigade commander Abbas al-Sayed was given 35 life sentences, Hamas leader Ibrahim Hamad 54, Muhammad Arman 36 and Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine leader Ahmed Sadat 30 life sentences.
Marwan Barghouti, known to Palestinians as Nelson Mandela, has five life sentences. This leader, who has been in Israeli prison since 2002, is considered the future president of Palestine.
However, this time, Hamas added several tougher conditions to the deal. These include a permanent ceasefire, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, an end to the two-decade-long blockade and the reconstruction of the Valley. which Israel has not yet agreed to accept.
Hamas leader Osama Hamadan said, "We want a complete end to the Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people and the withdrawal of the occupying forces from the Gaza Strip." We also demand an end to the 17-year siege in the valley, provision of shelter for the displaced, and the reconstruction of infrastructure destroyed by Israeli brutality. In addition, the recognition of an independent Palestinian state and the release of Palestinian prisoners.
Earlier last November, 300 Palestinians were released in exchange for 105 Israelis. All of whom are women and minor men. Of the 132 Israelis currently held by Hamas, 29 have died.
