New York, Sep 26 (V7N) – The Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim AA Khan, held a significant meeting with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Thursday at the United Nations Headquarters. The meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), focused on the ICC’s ongoing investigation into the deportation of Rohingyas, which began in 2019.

Khan provided an update to Prof Yunus on the progress of the investigation and shared his plans to visit Bangladesh by the end of the year. He also praised Prof Yunus’s three-point proposal, presented in a separate UN meeting on Wednesday, aimed at resolving the Rohingya crisis. The proposals include convening a UN-led urgent conference, revitalizing the Rohingya humanitarian response plan, and intensifying international efforts for justice and accountability for the 2017 genocide in Myanmar’s Rakhine state.

Khan endorsed the proposals as “perfect” solutions for breaking the deadlock in addressing the crisis.

Additionally, Prof Yunus inquired about the process for filing a case related to crimes against humanity at the ICC, particularly concerning the July-August uprising in Bangladesh, which resulted in over 700 deaths and 20,000 injuries. Khan confirmed that Bangladesh could file a complaint but stressed that specific legal procedures must be followed.

The meeting highlighted both parties' dedication to seeking justice for the Rohingya and ensuring accountability through the ICC.
