Misinformation about Russell’s Viper on social media has caused unnecessary panic in Bangladesh. Contrary to exaggerated claims, Russell’s Viper is not the world’s most venomous snake, though it is highly venomous and responsible for many snakebite incidents in India.

The Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change has issued guidelines to ensure public safety. Key precautions include:

  • Be cautious in snake-prone areas.
  • Avoid tall grass and bushes.
  • Wear protective clothing like boots and long pants.
  • Use lighting at night.
  • Keep surroundings clean to deter snakes.
  • Handle debris carefully.

In case of a snakebite, follow these steps:

  • Minimize movement to slow venom spread.
  • Clean the wound gently.
  • Remove restrictive items near the bite.
  • Avoid harmful interventions like pricking or applying ointments.
  • Seek immediate medical help, avoiding traditional healers.
  • Stay calm, as antivenom is available at government hospitals.

Health Minister Dr. Samanta Lal Sen assured sufficient antivenom supplies are in stock at hospitals. The ministry also emphasized the importance of natural predators like mongoose and eagles in controlling the viper population, urging the public to protect these species to maintain ecological balance.
