All Blacks coach Scott Robertson has made some notable changes to the starting lineup for New Zealand's final test of the Rugby Championship against Australia in Wellington on Saturday. Flyhalf Beauden Barrett replaces Damian McKenzie, with McKenzie dropping to the bench. Barrett will partner with TJ Perenara in an experienced halfback pairing, taking advantage of their long-standing combination from Super Rugby.
Sam Cane, set to play his 100th test, has been named at openside flanker, joining an elite group of All Blacks who have reached the century mark. Cane, who was the All Blacks captain until last season, will achieve this milestone in what will also be his final international on New Zealand soil, as he prepares for a move to Japanese club rugby.
Barrett's inclusion at flyhalf results in Will Jordan retaining the fullback position, a role he filled last week when Barrett was sidelined with a stomach bug. In another key change, Anton Lienert-Brown will start at inside centre, replacing Jordie Barrett, who is out with a knee injury.
On the bench, David Havili provides cover for the midfield, while experienced lock Patrick Tuipulotu returns from injury and is set to feature in the second row if required.
Robertson explained that Barrett was always slated to start at flyhalf, emphasizing the importance of giving opportunities and building depth in the squad. Barrett's leadership, versatility, and kicking prowess make him a valuable asset for the All Blacks, with Robertson hoping the competition for the No. 10 jersey remains fierce.
Meanwhile, Perenara, also heading to Japan at the end of the season, will be playing his last test in New Zealand at his home stadium, adding sentimental value to the occasion. Robertson praised Perenara for his competitiveness and contribution to the team.
Despite securing the Bledisloe Cup for another year with last week's win, the All Blacks are out of contention for the Rugby Championship title due to earlier losses against South Africa and a surprising defeat to Argentina. Nonetheless, Robertson emphasized that the selection of Cane for his 100th test is based on merit, as he continues to play at a high level.
