Nazmul Hossain Shanto has been named as the new captain of the Bangladesh cricket team in all three formats, replacing Shakib Al Hasan. The announcement was made by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hassan after a meeting with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday February 12th.
Shanto, who led Bangladesh in the recent World Cup in the absence of Shakib, has been given the captaincy for the year 2024. He will be the first Bangladesh captain to lead the team in all three formats since Mashrafe Mortaza in 2009.
Shakib, who had been the captain of the T20I and ODI teams since 2018, had expressed his desire to step down from the role after the World Cup. He had also hinted at retiring from Test cricket, but later clarified that he would continue to play in the longest format.
Shanto, who made his international debut in 2016, has played 23 Tests, 38 ODIs, and 28 T20Is for Bangladesh. He has scored 1,235 runs in Tests, 1,072 runs in ODIs, and 571 runs in T20Is, with four centuries and eight half-centuries across formats.
Shanto’s first assignment as the full-time captain will be the home series against Sri Lanka, starting from February 18. The series will consist of two Tests, three ODIs, and three T20Is.
The BCB also announced that no vice-captain has been appointed for the time being, and that the selection committee will be headed by Gazi Ashraf Hossain, with Hannan Sarkar as the new selector.
